The Art of Creating Curated Interiors: Why Your Home Deserves More Than Just “Pretty”

You know that feeling when you walk into a beautifully photographed home and think, “This is gorgeous, but I couldn’t actually live here”? I’ve been there too. After years of designing homes, I’ve learned that true interior design isn’t about creating magazine-perfect spaces—it’s about crafting homes that feel like you while actually supporting how you live.

What Makes a Home Truly Curated?

When I think about curated interiors, I think about my own coffee table. It’s actually made from reclaimed boat wood that my husband and I discovered during our travels in Brazil. We were wandering through local artisan markets, completely enchanted by the craftsmanship, and ended up shipping home an entire container of wooden treasures—including a dining table with legs made with the wheels of an old cart. Every piece tells a story: handcrafted bar pieces, accent chairs with stories carved into their grain.

That’s what curated design really means to me: every piece has intention, every element tells part of your story. It’s not about having the most expensive furniture, following the latest trends, or even traveling the world to collect pieces. It’s about surrounding yourself with things that make you smile, that spark memories, that work beautifully together because they all reflect who you are. Whether it’s a vintage find from a local antique shop, a piece passed down from family, or something that simply speaks to your heart—there are countless ways to create meaningful, personal spaces right where you are.

A curated interior blends function with soul. It’s the art of choosing pieces that not only look beautiful together, but also support your daily rituals and long-term dreams.

When Function Meets Heart: A Real Transformation Story

I’ll never forget walking into a client’s foyer for the first time. They had two accent chairs positioned right inside the front door, with a small cocktail table between them. My immediate thought was, “When was the last time anyone had a cocktail in their entryway?” The furniture was there to fill space, not to serve life.

Here’s what I saw instead: every day, this busy family with three children rushed in and out, dropping keys, mail, and bags wherever they landed. What they needed wasn’t a formal seating area—they needed a beautiful solution that could handle real family life.

We completely reimagined the space. I replaced those chairs with a stunning console table with drawers—because I truly value the importance of organization in maintaining a clean, functional space. Above it, we hung a round metal frame mirror that made the space feel larger and more welcoming. I styled the console table with a table lamp and a porcelain bowl, along with family photos that made the space feel personal and welcoming.

The game-changer? Under the console, I placed a custom upholstered bench with a hinged top. Now the family could sit to put on shoes while storing them out of sight. The entryway went from feeling like an awkward waiting room to a functional, welcoming space that actually supported their lifestyle while keeping the visual flow clean and uncluttered.

The Biggest Mistakes I See (And How to Avoid Them)

After working with countless clients, I’ve noticed the same patterns when homeowners try to furnish spaces themselves. The most common issues I encounter are:

→ Lack of vision or cohesive theme.   Without a clear direction, rooms end up feeling disjointed and disconnected from each other and from the people who live there.

→ Missing the functionality piece.  Beautiful furniture that doesn’t serve your actual needs creates frustration every single day. I always ask: how do you really live in this space?

→ Pieces that don’t relate to each other.  When furniture, lighting, rugs, and window treatments are chosen in isolation, rooms feel more like furniture showrooms than homes.

→ Scale issues everywhere. This might be the biggest culprit—gorgeous pieces that are simply wrong for the space, making rooms feel cramped or awkwardly empty.

→ Forgetting the story. Homes should tell the story of who lives there, not just showcase what’s trendy right now.

A Cautionary Tale: When Good Pieces Don’t Make a Great Home

I recently worked with a client who was more than halfway through furnishing her entire 3,000-square-foot home with help from sales associates at a well-known furniture retailer. She had invested significantly and chosen beautiful individual pieces, but that’s when the frustration set in—she realized something still wasn’t working despite being so far into the process.

When I walked through her home, I immediately understood her frustration. Despite having lovely furniture, the house felt impersonal—like a showroom rather than a family home. Everything came from the same source, which created a catalog-like uniformity that didn’t reflect her family’s personality or lifestyle.

The execution issues were significant: in the dining room, the table was too small for the space, and while the chairs were beautiful, they could only accommodate eight people when the room could comfortably seat twelve with proper planning. The light fixture was dramatically undersized for the room’s proportions. In the family room, the furniture layout wasn’t functional for daily life, the fabric choices weren’t practical for a family with young children and dogs, and the area rug was far too small for the seating arrangement.

What broke my heart was seeing how the stunning architectural elements—the beautiful moldings, the large and arched windows surrounding every single room, the perfect proportions—were being overshadowed by furnishing choices that didn’t honor the space or the family’s needs.

What I Want You to Know About Working Together

The part of my design process that I treasure most is that moment when a client truly trusts me with their vision. When they feel comfortable sharing not just what they want their home to look like, but how they want to feel in it—that’s when the magic happens.

I understand the frustration of having a clear vision but struggling with execution. My role isn’t to impose my style on your space; it’s to translate your dreams into a reality that works beautifully for your life. Whether we’re starting from scratch or reimagining what you already have, I’m here to ensure every decision serves both your aesthetic goals and your daily needs.

Here’s what I wish more people understood about the design process:  the earlier you involve a professional, the more we can help you avoid costly mistakes and create a home that truly reflects who you are. Rather than trying to fix furnishing mishaps later, we can create a comprehensive plan that considers everything from architectural features to family dynamics from the very beginning.

“The most successful spaces are born when design is part of the plan from the very beginning—not an afterthought.”
